I was childhood friends with Dennis during his late grammar school years at Saint Monica's and part of Sacred Heart High School. We learned to fish at Muni Pier, Fort Point, Lake Merced and sometimes Spreckles Lake (carp). I joined his family on annual camping trips in Central and Northern California. Before football, he was an excellent basketball player especially in 3-man games where he could not be stopped taking a jump shot near the basket. He played on our Richmond Packrat basketball team which won a City Recreation League Championship.
We spent many hours in his home, sometimes playing poker with Grandpa Roe or being disciplined by Grandma Rice.
Dennis and I travelled different paths after high school. I was unable to persuade him to play football at Notre Dame (at the urging of Grandma Rice).
I will always remember my best friend. I will keep Dennis and his family in my prayers.

May the blessing of light be on you—
light without and light within.
May the blessed sunlight shine on you
and warm your heart
till it glows like a great peat fire.

Dennis could always be counted on to cover my back. He,as as a CHP Officer, was one I could count on being there if I needed help as an RSO Deputy. We also shared many hours outside the lawman job. God Bless.

So sorry for this loss to the RICE family. Dennis was a dear friend to our family and made such an impression on me as a young boy. He was larger than life in my eyes and one of the chief examples which influenced my personal decision to become a Police Officer later in life. My sincerest of condolences to his family and children.
